2.1.9. Hierarchy of Control

The primary purpose of conducting a risk assessment is to determine the requisite controls that will ensure the level of risk is as low as achievable or practical. A criterion for considering whether the risk is at a suitable level is referred to as the hierarchy of control – nominally five levels of control measure (Table 7).

Providing an engineered control to a hazard, e.g. fitting guards to rotating machines

(Personal Protective Equipment) The use protective items or clothing that provide a last line of defence between a person and an energy source
