History of MIRMgate

The Minerals Industry Risk Management
Gateway (MIRMgate) is an initiative that was introduced at a 'National
Minerals Industry Guidelines Workshop' in October 2001, attended
by Australian state mining regulators and personnel from the Minerals
Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC), The University of Queensland.
By May 2002 all state regulators, except for South Australia, had
endorsed the project development, with the latter giving its endorsement
in June 2003.
MIRMgate was conceived as a means of making good
practice information, innovations and lessons learned information
available to the minerals industry. The MIRMgate framework is designed
to support the risk assessment process and was developed in close
consultation with sponsors and other industry personnel. MIRMgate
was launched in March 2004, and is managed by the MIRMgate team
at MISHC, under the support and guidance of industry representatives.
The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) assumed
sponsorship of MIRMgate in 2004 as part of the Minerals Industry
Cooperations Initiative (MICI). In 2005, the International Council
on Mining and Metals (ICMM) provided additional funding to identify
new overseas potential corporate, government or other resources
for MIRMgate and to gain the support of information contacts and
system champions on other continents.
